This site presents two separate research projects, each with its own paper. Both use Globe and Mail articles going back to the late 1970s, but they ask different questions and use different methods. Each project has its own section below.

Using a data-driven keyword discovery algorithm, we construct a monthly News-based Stress Index (NSI) that tracks major stress episodes and captures periods when concerns about financial risks intensify despite limited market disruption. The index runs from 1977 to 2026.
À l'aide d'un algorithme fondé sur les données pour repérer les mots clés, nous construisons un indice mensuel de stress fondé sur les nouvelles (NSI, selon le sigle anglais). Cet indice retrace les principaux épisodes de stress et repère les périodes où les préoccupations à l'égard des risques financiers s'intensifient malgré des perturbations limitées sur les marchés. L'indice couvre la période allant de 1977 à 2026.
Explore the index ↓Explorer l'indice ↓A topic model sorts more than 600,000 Globe and Mail articles into 160 topics, such as housing, monetary policy and the oil patch, and measures how much of the news each topic takes up every month from 1977 to 2026. It follows the method of Bybee, Kelly, Manela and Xiu, "Business News and Business Cycles" (2024).
